If you need the AI to return a JSON object, provide the schema in your prompt. If you need a Markdown table, show it the column headers. If you need a numbered list, tell it to create one.
This not only makes the output more predictable and useful, but it also seems to help the AI organize its thinking, leading to better, more structured reasoning.
Prompt Engineering for AI Agents
For AI agents that perform multi-step tasks, prompt engineering becomes even more critical. The agent’s overall goal is often broken down into a series of smaller steps, and each step is guided by a prompt.
A research agent might have a master prompt that defines its overall goal, but then use sub-prompts for each stage of the process: one prompt for generating search queries, another for summarizing articles, and a final one for synthesizing the findings into a report.
This modular approach makes the agent more reliable and easier to debug. If the agent is failing, you can isolate which step (and which prompt) is causing the problem.
The Future is Iteration
Prompt engineering is not a one-shot process. The best prompts are developed through iteration. You start with a basic prompt, see what the AI produces, and then refine the prompt to address the weaknesses in the output. Was the answer too generic? Add more specificity. Was the format wrong? Add output structuring. Was the reasoning flawed? Provide more context or better examples.
